Join us fo the Opening of Extranjera
Showcasing new works by Emily Riggert.
Show runs Sept.17- Oct.2nd 2016

Extranjera is a show about learning, the feeling of being an outsider, and the process of looking and making in the quest for understanding. Imagery for this show comes from several trips the artist has taken across Texas and through the southwestern desert to California. Combined with those images are ideas that come from the artist’s years-long study of the Spanish language, trips taken internally through books and conversations, and explorations of the multicultural environment of her own community.

A native Texan and a lover of community, Emily has found herself at home across the state in Dallas, San Antonio, and Austin. Her current home-base is in Oak Cliff. She began her career as a teaching artist in 2011. In the studio, Emily makes art about growth and decay in nature. She is interested in the confluence of creative process between maker and viewer, educator and student, and sees her work as an educator to be an extension of her own artwork. Emily is currently exploring these topics in her role as co-founder of Sunset Art Studios.
